Pieter Brueghel the Elder (after) (c. 1525–c. 1569) Fuga Deiparae in Aegyptum (The Flight of the Holy Family into Egypt). (Plate from a series of 12 large landscapes). c. 1553–1556. Etching and engraving by Jan and Lucas van Doetecum. 422 x 318 mm. Lebeer 10; Hollstein 15; New Hollstein (Bruegel) 60. A very fine print on thin laid paper. Marked creases at the edges. A large, oily, rust-coloured circular stain in the sky on the left, another smaller one in the tree on the right, and a third in the tree in the centre. Margins of 10–15 mm. Reproduced in J. van der Stock, ed., Hieronymus Cock; Renaissance Engraving (exhibition at the Royal Library of Belgium, Brussels, and at the Custodia Foundation, Frits Lugt Collection), Paris, Brussels, published by Fonds Mercator, 2013, p. 388, no. 107.10. ‘There is a fine crack in the plate near the letter “g” in “Fuga”.
