Description
Pieter Brueghel the Elder (after) (c. 1525–c. 1569) Large Alpine landscape. c. 1553–1556. Etching and engraving by Jan and Lucas van Doetecum. 467 x 370 mm. Lebeer 13; Hollstein 18; New Hollstein (Bruegel) 61. Fine print on thin laid paper. Light foxing and traces of oxidation. Oblique black ink stain in the top left-hand corner. Long oblique creases in the top right-hand corner. Central vertical drying crease, which has become brittle and has been restored on the reverse at the top and bottom. Several areas of thinning visible through the paper and tears previously restored on the reverse. Margins 2–3 mm. Reproduced in J. van der Stock, ed., Hieronymus Cock; Engraving in the Renaissance (exhibition at the Royal Library of Belgium, Brussels, and at the Custodia Foundation, Frits Lugt Collection), Paris, Brussels, Fonds Mercator, 2013, pp. 390–391, no. 108. ‘This print, larger than those belonging to the “Series of Twelve Great Landscapes”, bears no title. […] Its macrocosmic power bears witness to Bruegel’s conceptions and visions regarding the heroic grandeur of living nature. The sensitive craftsmanship with which the engraver succeeds in establishing the planes of this grandiose fragment of the universe and in endowing the engraved line with its allure of sensory beauty allows this print to be ranked amongst the most accomplished engravings of the period.” (Louis Lebeer, Catalogue raisonné of the prints of Bruegel the Elder, Brussels, Royal Library of Albert I, 1969, p. 52) Expert: Hélène BONAFOUS-MURAT.
