Description
James Ensor (1860–1949)
The Cathedral (1st plate). 1886. Etching. 190 x H. 245 mm (dimensions including the bevel). Taevernier 7. A very fine print on Japanese paper, from the third and final state, with a stray line across the hat at the bottom centre; signed and dated in pencil on the front, then annotated in red pencil on the reverse – notably including the artist’s full initials at the bottom – and titled in pencil. Two remnants of mounting tabs on the right-hand edge on the front, the lower one partially torn off (causing slight paper loss). Three pieces of gummed paper at the edges of the sheet on the reverse. Full margins.
Expert: Hélène BONAFOUS-MURAT.
