Plate 1 from the ‘Alexander the Great’ portfolio. 1982. Colour silkscreen print. 1,000 x 1,000 mm. Feldman-Schellmann II.291. A very fine print on Lenox Museum Board, from an edition of 25, numbered and signed in pencil. In the lower left-hand corner, a dry stamp by the printer Rupert Jasen Smith. On the reverse, in the lower left-hand corner, a printed inscription in brown-red: ‘ © Andy Warhol 1982”. The tip of the lower left-hand corner is slightly worn. Andy Warhol produced the portfolio of two works on the subject of Alexander the Great in 1982, in collaboration with the Hellenic Heritage Foundation. This series was created to coincide with the exhibition ‘The Search for Alexander’, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 27 October 1982 to 3 January 1983. For these images, Warhol drew inspiration from a Hellenistic-period bronze head of Alexander held in a private collection. The choice of an ancient sculpture rather than a painting gives this portfolio a special place within the artist’s oeuvre.
