Description
Two framed oban-sized prints. By Utagawa Toyokuni III / Kunisada (1786–1864) – the first of which depicts a yakusha-e (print of kabuki actors) commemorating a special moment in the kojo (ceremonial speech). The two samurai are kneeling, and the ‘mon’ crest on one of the costumes indicates the Ichikawa family. Dimensions: 36.5 x 25.3 cm. Soiling and stains, wormholes. No margins visible. The second, by Utagawa Toyokuni (1769–1825), is from the series ‘Tosei Yakusha Aikyo Kagami’ and depicts the popular actor Roko. This series of yakusha okubi-e depicts close-up portraits of kabuki actors looking into a hand mirror. On one side is the actor as he is in real life, without make-up, and in the mirror is the actor’s face, made up to portray his role. Dimensions: 34 × 23 cm. No visible margins.
