René Morère, whose family emigrated to Paris from Castillon-en-Couserans in Ariège, was known as "the Castillonnais of Montmartre". During the 1930s, he had his studio in the Passage Lepic in Montmartre and painted the naked girls of joy in the cabarets of the Rue Blanche. He returned to live with his mother in Castillon in 1941 where, suffering from a lung disease, he died at the age of 35 on 23 December 1942.
