Theatre, Europe, early 18th century
A broken-type fan in pierced, carved, engraved and painted ivory decorated with actors performing on a theatre stage. The simulated throat is decorated with characters in the Chinese style. Pierrot on the left plays the guitar. The sculpted plumes of a lover holding a flying heart with a ribbon. The head is adorned with a fine tortoise shell plate.
The reverse side is painted with a transparent line of the decoration on the face.
