The eruption of Vesuvius, Italy, circa 1822
A souvenir fan from the Grand Tour, this double sheet of painted skin depicts a night view of the explosive eruption of Vesuvius, with the bay of Naples lit up by the glow of light and onlookers contemplating the spectacle.
Vesuvius erupted several times in the early 19th century. The one on 22 October 1822 was characterised by projections into the atmosphere. The Musée Carnavalet in Paris has an illustrated fan of this eruption, seen during the day (inv. EV360).
The reverse is painted in gilt with flowers.
Mounted in pierced gilt brass, the plumes enriched with half-turquoises.
