Description
Set of 5 photographs: - 1 artist’s impression of the Vanguard SLV-1 on the launch pad (failure on 27 May 1958), 25 x 21 cm. - 3 ‘trajectory planning’ photographs, 25 x 21 cm - 1 US Navy-captioned photograph of the rocket’s second stage being fuelled (3 December 1957), 25 x 21 cm Vanguard was a small American launch vehicle developed by the NRL (Naval Research Laboratory), the aim of which was to place the first artificial satellite into orbit. However, following nine failures out of twelve launches between 1956 and 1959, the Juno 1 launch vehicle was tasked with launching the first satellite into orbit, Explorer 1, on 1 February 1958, without the Vanguard programme being called into question. On 17 March 1958, Vanguard finally achieved success with Vanguard 1, which became the second American satellite in orbit. All the photographs come from the archives of the public relations department of the Martin Company in Baltimore (which later became Martin-Marietta and then Lockheed-Martin). All the documents are original Martin documents and are in black and white.
