Description
RANGER 2 (launched on 18 November 1961): set of 5 photographs.
- 2 photographs of the Ranger 2 probe:
-1 photograph of the aerodynamic fairing being carefully lowered onto the probe by technicians (period silver-gelatin print from JPL, 20.5 cm x 25.5 cm, numbered 314-5041b).
-1 NASA photograph of technicians completing the assembly of Ranger 2 (captioned on the reverse, no. 61-RangerII-2).
-3 unnumbered and uncaptioned drawings from a series similar to the previous Lot 1 but relating to Ranger 2.
The Ranger programme was designed to take precise photographs of the Moon and gather information on the composition of the lunar surface. Nine Ranger probes were launched on an Atlas-Agena B rocket between 23 August 1961 and 24 March 1965. They were produced by JPL, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (California). Following a number of failures with Ranger 1 to Ranger 6, the programme was a success from Ranger 7 onwards.
All the photographs are original black-and-white silver gelatin prints, measuring 20.5 x 25.5 cm, sourced either from JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) or from NASA.
