Description
RANGER 8 (launched on 17 February 1965): set of 5 photographs - 1 photograph of Ranger 8 as seen by a technician. NASA photograph, captioned and numbered 65-H-97. -4 photographs of the lunar surface at different altitudes, taken prior to the probe’s planned crash landing in the Sea of Tranquillity on 20 February 1965 (photographs with captions). A total of 7,137 photographs of the Moon were taken. The Ranger programme was designed to take detailed photographs of the Moon and gather information on the composition of the lunar surface. Nine Ranger probes were launched on an Atlas-Agena B rocket between 23 August 1961 and 24 March 1965. They were produced by JPL, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (California). Following a number of failures with Ranger 1 to Ranger 6, the programme proved successful from Ranger 7 onwards. All the photographs are original black-and-white silver gelatin prints, measuring 20.5 x 25.5 cm, sourced either from JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) or from NASA.
