RANGER 9 (launched on 21 March 1965): 15 black-and-white lithographs of photographs taken by Ranger 9, size (22 x 28 cm) from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, including the very last three taken by the probe, which crashed as planned on 24 March in the Alphonsus crater, after transmitting 5,814 images of the Moon’s surface. The Ranger programme was designed to take detailed photographs of the Moon and gather information on the composition of the lunar surface. Nine Ranger probes were launched on Atlas-Agena B rockets between 23 August 1961 and 24 March 1965. They were produced by JPL, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (California). Following a number of failures with Ranger 1 to Ranger 6, the programme proved successful from Ranger 7 onwards. All the photographs are original black-and-white silver gelatin prints, measuring 20.5 x 25.5 cm, sourced either from JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) or from NASA.
