Set of 2 photographs: 1) THE VERY FIRST PHOTOGRAPH of the Earth taken from near the Moon (part of the far side in the foreground). 20 x 25 cm, black and white, no. L-66-7861. Inscribed on the reverse: NASA Langley Research Centre, and a 38 x 44 cm poster (either Boeing or NASA) explaining how the historic photograph was taken on 23 August 1966, during the 16th lunar orbit. 2) THE VERY FIRST PHOTOGRAPH of an object in lunar orbit: The Lunar Orbiter 5 probe as seen through a telescope at the Catalina Observatory. 20 x 25 cm black-and-white photograph (Boeing No. P42674), taken on 28 July 1968. Lunar Orbiter 5 photographed the entire far side of the Moon. The mission ended when the spacecraft crashed into the Moon on 31 January 1968. LUNAR ORBITER PROGRAMME – Five Lunar Orbiter probes were launched between 10 August 1966 and 1 August 1967, with the aim of identifying potential landing sites for future Apollo missions. Orbiters I to III were designed to provide images of 20 potential landing sites and flew in low-inclination orbits.
