Description
Set of 4 photographs of the emergency evacuation system used in the event of a problem on Launch Pad 39-A. Astronaut Stuart Roosa can be seen in the centre of the photograph (photo no. 1108-KSC-69P-40), testing an escape capsule two months before the Apollo 9 flight. The ‘Slide Wire’ on this capsule was a slide system enabling the evacuation of a crew of three astronauts and six members of the umbilical tower staff from the rocket, a distance of 670 metres west of the launch pad, to take refuge safely in a bunker.
