Photograph of Earth taken by the Skylab 2 crew, showing a view of South America beneath the clouds. Original NASA colour print (20.5 cm × 25.5 cm), captioned on the reverse and bearing the number SL2-5-325. SKYLAB MISSIONS – Skylab, the first American orbital station, launched on 14 May 1973 as Skylab 1 (SL-1). It disintegrated on 11 July 1979. Skylab 2 SL-2: first manned flight on 25 May 1973 with Pete Conrad, Joseph Kerwin and Paul Weitz: they installed a makeshift sunshade made of Mylar and nylon (thermal insulation) and freed the solar panel that had failed to deploy. 28-day mission. Skylab 3 SL-3: second crew: launched on 28 July 1973. Returned on 25 September 1973. Alan Bean, Owen Garriott and Jack Lousma (with the spiders Anita and Arabella). 59-day mission. Skylab 4 SL-4: 3rd crew: launched on 16 November 1973; returned on 8 February 1974. Gerald Carr, Edward Gibson and William Pogue. Went on strike after seven weeks to secure a day off. 84-day mission.
