Description
A series of four photographs documenting the Northern Lights, taken from a NASA Convair 990 jet flying from its base at Fort Churchill on Hudson Bay, in Canada. Thirty-five scientists from universities, industry and government agencies in the USA, Canada and France are taking part in this study, carrying out three to four flights a week in the northern polar regions. Flying at altitudes of up to 40,000 feet, the aircraft is above five-sixths of the Earth’s atmosphere and above more than 96 per cent of its water vapour – two conditions that prevent effective ground-based observations.
