Description
Photo of the Sacramento Valley, California. On 23 July 1972, NASA launched the first Earth observation satellite, then known as ERTS (Earth Resources Technology Satellite), later renamed Landsat 1. The purpose of this satellite was to study and monitor the Earth’s land masses. Three colours – green, red and infrared – observed and recorded separately by the satellite were combined at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre (Greenbelt, Maryland). Vintage black-and-white NASA print (20.5 cm × 25.5 cm), dated 29 September 1972, captioned on the reverse and bearing the number 72-H-1319.
