A gigantic iceberg, roughly the size of the state of Rhode Island, was spotted by the Landsat satellite on 31 January 1977, at an altitude of 920 km. This iceberg is 74 km long, 40 km wide and between 230 and 345 metres thick. It contains enough ice to sustain the city of Washington DC for between five and seven thousand years, or the state of California for 1,100 years!
