Description
Acrylic embedding block containing a sample of aluminised polyamide film (3 cm × 2 cm) taken from an original multi-layer insulating blanket (MLI) covering the exterior of the Hubble Space Telescope. It was removed on 24 December 1999 from the hatch of compartment 10 of the support module during the 3A maintenance mission by astronauts Steven Smith and John Grunsfeld on mission STS-103. This material travelled more than 2.4 billion kilometres in orbit, from the launch of mission STS-31 on 24 April 1990 (Hubble’s deployment) to the landing of mission STS-103 on 27 December 1999. On the reverse of the block, a photograph of the Hubble telescope shows an arrow indicating the origin of this sample. Block measuring 11.5 x 9 cm, 2 cm thick. Limited edition, no. 28/75.
