The Vostok programme was the Soviet Union’s first manned space programme, with tests carried out in 1960 and 1961, and which resulted in six manned flights between 1961 and 1963. It was thus on 12 April 1961 that Yuri Gagarin became the first man to travel into space (Vostok 1 mission).
