Description
Two tiny samples of the heat shield from the Russian space shuttle Buran, which flew just once, unmanned, on 15 November 1988. Buran was a Soviet reusable spacecraft programme developed in response to the American space shuttles, but the political situation in the USSR and the project’s excessive cost quickly brought the programme to an end.
These two samples (5 mm and 1 cm) are made of high-purity quartz fibre ceramic capable of withstanding temperatures of over 1500°.
Also included are two 3.5 cm-long pins from the Buran space shuttle. One of them bears the inscription ‘CCCP’.
