Description
PONTIAC 28 Touring Sedan "Eight Chassis number #8DA-4036 Engine number #144556 Produced in 1938 Professionally restored Exceptional in-line 8-cylinder engine Rare model in France and Europe Very good collector condition French collector's registration The Model 28 from Pontiac, a brand of the powerful American company General Motors, was mainly produced in the 6 series for its in-line six-cylinder engine. Developed in several versions and body styles, including saloon, sedan and convertible, it met with undeniable commercial success. With the emergence of the European car market and the powerful saloons being produced across the Rhine by the Reich's Mercedes and Horch industries, as well as in France by Bugatti and Delage, General Motors launched production of the Eight. Based on the Model 28 but larger and more imposing, with a long wheelbase and an in-line 8-cylinder engine, it had automatic ignition and an electric choke. The gearbox was synchronised. The bodywork was produced by Fisher Body. In 1942, production of civilian cars was completely halted in the USA, and the company concentrated solely on the manufacture of military equipment. Pontiac played an active role in the war effort, producing cannons, torpedoes and shells, tank engines, etc. Pontiac 28 "sixes" and "eights" were used by the American army for liaison and officer transport. This rare "Eight" was sold new in France in 1938, with its original import plate showing the address of the importer, General Motors, 151 avenue du Président Wilson in Puteaux, in the Seine department at the time. From 1940 to 1944, it was certainly seriously concealed from the occupying forces, the armies of the Reich, Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe, greatly appreciating the re-use of American cars in all theatres of operations, some ending up on the Russian front... Discovered in Seine et Marne in 1993 by its owner, who had been keeping it in a garage since 1972, it was completely restored from the chassis up. As new original parts are still readily available in the USA, the restoration was carried out in accordance with the production standards of the period. The quality of the work carried out to align the body components and the exceptional upholstery is outstanding. The wiring harness is made from original new cotton wires. Specific to its French import at the time, the speedometer is in kilometres per hour and the carburettor is a Solex model. The Eight's aesthetic lines, long bonnet and imposing radiator grille leave no one indifferent. A rare model in the collection, restored to a beautiful patina and perfectly functional, this Pontiac "Eight" is an opportunity not to be missed.
