Provenance Normandy
Produced from 1941 to 1944 by the Steyr firm in Austria and an evolution of the off-road capable car range, the model 270 was used in all the Heer's theatres of operation.
As production demand increased with the globalisation of the conflict, production of the Steyr 1500 was also entrusted to Auto-Union Wanderer's Factory in Sigmar and Audi in Zwickau, Germany.
Robust and reliable, well powered with its 3.5-litre V8, the Steyr 270 remains one of the most efficient 4x4 automobiles in the armies of the Reich.
This example was found in Normandy as a wreck in the "corridor of death" sector, near the village of Trun in the Orne department.
Used after the war as an all-purpose tractor, its bodywork was partly dismantled and its remaining parts subjected to the wear and tear of time and the elements. Its production and instruction plates had also disappeared.
Its owner embarked on a long and tedious restoration, with the body being professionally rebuilt to the original standard, using high-quality wood and sheet metal. The chassis and mechanical parts, with its original engine and gearbox, axles and transmissions, were also reconditioned. The roll-bars and tarpaulins are new productions.
The work was carried out at a time when parts and information on this rare model were hard to find, with restorers favouring function over detail. The restoration project was carried out while preserving the original parts.
This Steyr 1500 is a rare collector's item that stands out from the Volkswagen and other more common makes of car.
