Description
EGYPTIAN PAINTED POTTERY JAR WITH LOTUS FLOWERS, PAPYRUS STEMS AND ANKHS.
New Kingdom, Ca. 1550 - 1069 BC. A large pottery jar with a biconical body tapering to a pointed base and a tall neck with an outward-flaring rim. The surface is painted in red, blue, and black on a buff ground. The neck is decorated with two registers of vertical petals framed by horizontal bands. The main frieze on the shoulder comprises two stylised lotus flowers with upward-curving stems, a large ankh sign flanked by paired papyrus stalks, and a second ankh flanked by Nilotic plants. The decoration is bounded above and below by horizontal tricolour bands. For similar see: The Brooklyn Museum, Accession Number 16.140. This piece is accompanied by an authentication statement from Simone Musso, consultant curator for Egyptian antiquities at the Stibbert Museum, Florence, Italy, member of the Nuri Archaeological Expedition.
