EGYPTIAN PAINTED CARTONNAGE FRAGMENT WITH EMBALMING SCENE.
Ptolemaic Period, Ca. 332 - 30 BC. A painted cartonnage mummy fragment with a broad collar above a net shroud, decorated with geometric and floral ornament in red, blue, yellow, and white. The upper panel depicts the embalming of the deceased on a lion-shaped bier, with Anubis leaning over the body and holding an ointment jar in his raised left hand. Seven canopic jars are placed beneath the bier, and Isis and Nephthys stand at either side as protective goddesses. The scene is enclosed by colour-block borders. Framed.
