RARE GREEK GOLD MASK WITH INSCRIPTIONS.
Ca. 1400 BC. A gold funerary mask composed of six separate repousse elements, inscribed on the edges, including, from top to bottom: a pair of almond-shaped eyes with central slits; a pair of ears with outlined inner contours; a long triangular nose with a central ridge and rounded nostrils; and an elongated mouth plaque with a central slit and short vertical notches, suggesting teeth. Size: 65-95mm x 30-50mm; Weight: 24.5g Provenance: From a private London collection; Ex UK art gallery, 2000s; Previously in Heinz Herzer collection, Germany; Ex Dr. Hans Stenzl collection, Germany, 1970s.The XRF analyses performed demonstrate that the compositional profile of the metal is consistent with, and technically compatible with, documented metallic compositions of objects from the attributed historical period, thereby providing substantial material support for the object’s authenticity.
