Description
GREEK GOLD MASK.
Ca. 1400 BC. A gold funerary mask composed of six separate repousse elements, including, from top to bottom: a pair of almond-shaped eyes with incised pupils and eyelashes; a pair of ears with outlined inner contours; a triangular nose; and an elongated mouth plaque with inscribed edges and small perforations at either end. Size: 18-70mm x 5-25mm; Weight: 3.2g Provenance: From a private London collection; Ex UK art gallery, 2000s; Previously in Heinz Herzer collection, Germany. The XRF analyses performed demonstrate that the compositional profile of the metal is consistent with, and technically compatible with, documented metallic compositions of objects from the attributed historical period, thereby providing substantial material support for the object’s authenticity. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
