GREEK PERIOD CARNELIAN CYLINDER SEAL WITH A HERO GRASPING GRIFFINS AND BES MASTERING GAZELLES.
Ca. 500 - 330 BC. A carnelian cylinder seal, drilled longitudinally and engraved with two scenes. The principal scene shows a central hero grasping the necks of two confronted griffins. The smaller scene shows the Egyptian dwarf-god Bes in a feathered crown, with a tufted tail hanging between his wide-set legs, depicted as Master of Animals and holding two confronted gazelles by the necks. Size: 29.5mm x 13.9mm; Weight: 9.54g Provenance: Private London collection, acquired on the London art market; Ex 'S' collection, acquired 1970-1990s. The collection was seen and studied by W.G.Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993.. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
