Description
LARGE GREEK APULIAN RED-FIGURE CALYX KRATER WITH NAISKOS SCENE.
Ca. 400 - 300 BC. A red-figure calyx krater with a deep, rounded body tapering to a short stem and a spreading disc foot. A pair of horizontal loop handles springs from the lower body. A wave pattern runs around the rim, with a laurel wreath below. The lower body is framed by a wave pattern above a band of meander. Side A shows a funerary offering scene centred on a seated woman beneath an architectural naiskos with columns with Corinthian capitals, a tympanum, and palmette acroteria, the structure set on a three-step podium. The woman sits three-quarters to right on a square stool, dressed in a chiton fastened at the shoulders by two fibulae, with a stephane and a mirror held in the raised hand. On either side stand young women in floor-length chitons, one extending a patera towards the seated figure. Side B shows two women in the "Lady of Fashion" style flanking an offering pedestal, one holding a patera and situla, the other with a mirror and a box.
