Description
LARGE APULIAN RED-FIGURE AMPHORA WITH NAISKOS SCENE AND ALTAR. Ca. 400 - 300 BC. A red-figure amphora with a flaring mouth, a short cylindrical neck, an ovoid body tapering to a narrow stem, a spreading foot, and a pair of vertical strap handles rising from the flat shoulder, decorated with radiating tongues above a band of waves. The main side shows a rectangular naiskos enclosing two male figures, attended by female figures at either side. The back is centred by a tall stele decorated with a fillet, with female attendants bringing offerings. The scenes are divided by large palmettes. A meander band encircles the lower body. Size: 840mm x 340mm; Weight: 9.54kg Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in France in the early 2000s; formerly in a Swiss private collection formed in the 1980s and 1990s. This piece is accompanied by a historical report from Alessandro Neri, an international Cultural Heritage expert based in Florence, Italy. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
