APULIAN RED-FIGURE BELL KRATER WITH KOMASTOS AND MAENAD. Ca. 400 - 300 BC. A red-figure bell krater with a broad flaring mouth and a thickened rim above a deep body on a discoid foot, with a pair of horizontal handles set at the sides. The zone below the rim is painted with a laurel band, and the lower body with a meander. Side A is painted with a komastos facing a maenad. He leans on a long staff, and she extends her right hand towards him. Discs and a dotted fillet fill the field. Side B is painted with two ephebi facing one another, both cloaked in himatia, one holding a staff. For similar see: The British Museum, Museum number 1856,1226.26. Size: 320mm x 280mm; Weight: 2.52kg Provenance: London private collection; Switzerland acquisition; ex Geneva collection, late 1980s–early 2000s.
