Description
LARGE GREEK APULIAN RED-FIGURE HYDRIA WITH HOPLITES COMBAT SCENE.
Ca. 400 - 300 BC. A red-figure hydria with a broad flaring mouth, a tall neck painted with vertical strokes, a rounded shoulder with two horizontal handles, and a vertical rear handle rising to the neck, the ovoid body on a tall stem and a spreading foot. The main panel shows a combat scene with armed hoplites in motion, carrying shields and spears, one figure advancing over a fallen opponent. The reverse is decorated with a large palmette and scrolling tendrils filling the fields beneath the handles. A wave band encircles the lower body, with reserved bands around the stem and foot.
