ROMAN BRONZE APPLIQUE OF CUPID WITH SILVER-INLAID EYES HOLDING A HARE.
Ca. AD 200. A bronze applique of Cupid, depicted frontally with silver-inlaid eyes, the head inclined slightly to the right and framed by thick curling hair. He holds a hare in his right hand and a bunch of grapes in his left, with the silver-inlaid inscription MLOVIS across the chest. The spreading wings are pierced for attachment, and the reverse is hollow. For similar see: The British Museum, Museum number 1873,0820.176-177. Size: 80mm x 65mm; Weight: 235g Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Switzerland; previously in the C.B. collection, 1970s–1990s. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
