Description
ROMANO-SABEAN BRONZE OIL LAMP WITH HORSE PROTOME HANDLE.
Ca. AD 300 - 500.
A bronze oil lamp with a deep body, a narrow raised rim, and a projecting nozzle. The arched handle is surmounted by the forepart of a horse, cast with extended forelegs, a long neck, an incised mane, short ears, and a finely modelled head with incised eyes, nostrils, and mouth. A pyramidal knop projects from the horse’s back.
