Description
GRAECO ROMAN MARBLE STATUE OF CROUCHING APHRODITE / VENUS.
Ca. AD 1 - 200.
This under-life-size (ht. 50 mm) Graeco-Roman marble sculpture of a “Crouching Aphrodite” presents a sensuous figure of the goddess with a surface that shows evidence of age and damage. Her body, originally rendered with smooth contours, has various breaks involving her head, raised right arm, lowered left arm, and front parts of both feet. There are also small chips visible along the surface of the remaining parts of the limbs and edges of her body. The marble shows uneven discoloration, ranging from warmer, yellowed tones to grayish patches, suggesting prolonged exposure and possible burial conditions. A subtle patina extends over the surface of the figure. Areas of abrasion and weathering further obscure somewhat the finer anatomical features, with minor accretions and surface staining. Despite these blemishes, the work retains a strong sense of its original grace and composition. Provenance: UK private collection; Germany acquisition; ex Brussels collection, 1990s–2010. For similar see: The Royal Collection Trust, RCIN 69746. Size: 500mm x 420mm; Weight: 62.3kg
