RARE ROMAN IRON LONG GLADIUS WITH BRONZE SCABBARD FITTINGS. Ca. AD 1 - 100. A long iron gladius with a straight fullered blade tapering to a sharp point and a narrow flat-section tang ending in a bronze domed disc secured by a conical terminal. Accompanying it are four bronze scabbard fittings and a bronze pelta-shaped chape with openwork scrolls and a female head projecting from the centre. Size: 50-815mm x 50-80mm; Weight: 990g Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Belgium; formerly in Dr. Roozendaal collection, The Netherlands, 1970s-1980s. This piece is accompanied by a historical report from Alessandro Neri, an international Cultural Heritage expert based in Florence, Italy. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
