STUNNING BYZANTINE GREEN STONE TORSO OF CHRIST PANTOCRATOR, WITH A CROSS ON THE REVERSE.
Ca. AD 900 - 1100. A green stone torso of Christ, carved with heavy drapery falling in broad, deeply cut folds across the chest and around the arms. The left hand holds a book with a cross on the cover. The reverse is flat and engraved with a large cross dividing the surface into four fields, inscribed IC / XC / NI / KA, an abbreviation of Iesous Christos Nika (“Jesus Christ conquers”). This piece is accompanied by a historical report from Alessandro Neri, an international Cultural Heritage expert based in Florence, Italy.
