LARGE BYZANTINE MARBLE TABLE WITH CHRISTIAN SYMBOLS.
Ca. AD 600 - 800. A large marble table with a circular recessed centre and a broad raised border carved with 17 roundels enclosing Christian symbols, Byzantine zodiac animals, and birds shown in profile, divided by rosettes and scrolling ornament. There are remnants of the original red pigment, a colour of power during Roman and Byzantine periods. For similar see: Bonhams, Antiquities, 24 Oct 2012, Lot. 178.
