MESOPOTAMIAN WHETSTONE WITH BRONZE BULL FOREPART HANDLE. Ca. 1st millennium BC. A long cylindrical whetstone with a rounded end, set into a bronze handle cast as the forepart of a bull, modelled with the head held upright, an open mouth with the tongue extended, blue inlaid eyes, and folded legs beneath the chest. A small ring with a bell is suspended at the front. For similar see: The British Museum, Museum number 128792. Size: 285mm x 95mm; Weight: 780g Provenance: Private UK collection; ex Oxfordshire ancient art collection; ex Canadian collection, 1970s–2000.
