Description
APULIAN RED-FIGURE SQUAT LEKYTHOS WITH MAENAD.
Ca. 400 - 300 BC.
A red-figure squat lekythos with a globular body on a low foot and a cylindrical neck below a flaring mouth. A strap handle joins the shoulder to the neck, which is painted with vertical rays. The main panel is painted with a maenad advancing and holding dotted sprigs and a fillet. At the side is a female head in profile, and dotted ornaments fill the field. The reverse is decorated with a large palmette between rosettes and scrolling tendrils.
