Description
LARGE GREEK APULIAN RED-FIGURE SKYPHOS WITH PERSEUS.
Ca. 400 - 300 BC.
A red-figure skyphos with a deep tapering cup on a circular foot and a pair of horizontal handles. The rim is painted with an ovolo band, and the lower body is encircled by reserved lines. Side A depicts Perseus in a short chiton and winged sandals, running left and holding the kibisis, a bag for the head of Medusa, in his left hand and the harpe, a sickle-like sword, in his right. Side B is painted with a seated woman holding a wreath in her outstretched right hand. The figured panels are framed by scrolling palmettes.
