Description
BYZANTINE GLAZED TERRACOTTA FOOTED BOWL WITH FLORAL MOTIFS - EX ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM COLLECTION. Ca. AD 1300 - 1500. A sgraffito terracotta footed bowl with a rounded rim above a deep carinated body and a short spreading stem on a circular foot. The interior is decorated with intersecting bands enclosing scrolling floral tendrils against hatched grounds, highlighted in green and amber glaze, with a narrow border of repeated roundels below the lip. The exterior is encircled by a broad frieze of triangles. For similar see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Object Number: 10.15.3. Size: 160mm x 110mm; Weight: 540g Provenance: Property of a central London gallery; Ex collection of James Alfred Brew (1923 - 2008), collected in Cyprus during the 1960s.
