Description
BYZANTINE GLAZED TERRACOTTA FOOTED BOWL WITH FLORAL MOTIFS - EX ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM COLLECTION.
Ca. AD 1300 - 1500. A sgraffito terracotta footed bowl with a flaring rim above a deep body, rising from a short stem and a spreading ring foot. The exterior is decorated around the upper zone with a frieze of stylised floral motifs, outlined in dark pigment and washed with green and yellow glaze. The interior is centred by a roundel filled with a gridded field, each compartment enclosing a circle, with splashes of green and yellow glaze, and a narrow border of zigzags beneath the rim. Size: 145mm x 110mm; Weight: 450g Provenance: Property of a central London gallery; Ex collection of James Alfred Brew (1923 - 2008), collected in Cyprus during the 1960s.
