Description
BYZANTINE GLAZED TERRACOTTA FOOTED BOWL WITH GEOMETRIC MOTIFS - EX ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM COLLECTION.
Ca. AD 1300 - 1500. A sgraffito terracotta footed bowl with a slightly flaring rim above a deep body, rising from a short stem and a spreading foot. The exterior is decorated around the upper zone with a band of spirals, with washes of green and yellow glaze. The interior is centred by a roundel of geometric motifs in the central field, flanked by scrolling tendrils, highlighted in green and yellow glaze, with a narrow border of arches beneath the rim. Size: 145mm x 115mm; Weight: 440g Provenance: Property of a central London gallery; Ex collection of James Alfred Brew (1923 - 2008), collected in Cyprus during the 1960s. Thence by descent to Elaine Brew. Discovered in Elea. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
