Description
BYZANTINE GLAZED TERRACOTTA FOOTED BOWL WITH FLORAL MOTIFS - EX ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM COLLECTION. Ca. AD 1300 - 1500. A sgraffito terracotta footed bowl with a hemispherical body on a low spreading pedestal foot and an outturned rim. The interior is decorated with intersecting linear bands forming a cross, the surrounding compartments filled with stylised floral motifs in green and amber glaze. A continuous scrolling band runs around the inner rim, with alternating green and yellow glaze, and further dripped glaze accents continue over the exterior beneath the lip. Size: 155mm x 90mm; Weight: 450g Provenance: Property of a central London gallery; Ex collection of James Alfred Brew (1923 - 2008), collected in Cyprus during the 1960s. Thence by descent to Elaine Brew. Discovered in Elea. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
