Description
BYZANTINE GLAZED TERRACOTTA FOOTED BOWL WITH CENTRAL FLORAL MOTIF - EX ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM COLLECTION.
Ca. AD 1300 - 1500. A sgraffito terracotta footed bowl with a deep body on a low pedestal foot. The exterior is decorated with a broad frieze of adjoining lozenges, each centred by a floral scroll. The interior is decorated with a central roundel divided by intersecting bands into four compartments, each filled with a simplified floral spray, with splashes in green and amber across the well and beneath the rim. Size: 130mm x 105mm; Weight: 435g Property of a central London gallery; Ex collection of James Alfred Brew (1923 - 2008), collected in Cyprus during the 1960s. Thence by descent to Elaine Brew. Discovered in Elea. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
