Description
BYZANTINE SILVER-INLAID BRONZE THREE-OUNCE WEIGHT.
Ca. AD 700 - 900. A circular bronze weight with a raised rim and a recessed central field engraved with a cross flanked by two gamma symbols, one denoting the ounce and the other the numeral three. The field is enclosed by concentric borders of punched dots, short strokes and zigzags, with traces of silver inlay. Size: 30mm x 30mm; Weight: 20g Provenance: Private London collection; previously on the French art market during the 1970s–1980s. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
