Description
BRONZE AGE WHETSTONE WITH IBEX.
Ca. 1200 - 800 BC. A bronze whetstone handle cast as the forepart of an ibex, with a tapering cylindrical socket marked with encircling grooves and a long curved neck ending in a small head with a short muzzle, pellet eyes, and a curled beard. Two large looping horns sweep back above the head, with rings suspended from the ears. The forelegs are folded along the body. For similar see: National Museums Liverpool, Accession number 1966.180. Size: 175mm x 165mm; Weight: 695g Provenance: Private UK collection; previously part of an Oxfordshire ancient art collection; acquired from a Canadian collection formed between the 1970s and 2000.
