Description
BRONZE AGE BRONZE SCEPTRE WITH MASTER OF ANIMALS. Ca. 1200 - 800 BC. A bronze openwork standard sceptre above a baluster-shaped socket, with six human masks arranged in a vertical sequence and flanked at the base by a pair of animal hindquarters. In the centre, a Master of Animals figure is surmounted by a further human head, each with a pair of outstretched arms grasping the long arched necks of confronted beasts, issuing from cock heads at the lower corners and ending in animal heads at the top. The composition is surmounted by a knopped terminal. Size: 365mm x 80mm; Weight: 535g Provenance: Private UK collection; ex Oxfordshire ancient art collection; ex Canadian collection, 1970s–2000.
