Description
ROMAN NORTH AFRICAN TERRACOTTA OIL LAMP WITH PALM TREE.
Ca. AD 400 - 600. A mould-made terracotta oil lamp of Atlante X; Hayes II A type, with a rounded body tapering to a long channelled nozzle and a pointed handle at the rear, flattened at the sides. The discus is enclosed by a raised ridge, with a central filling hole and a palm tree in the field. The shoulder is decorated with alternating heart-shaped motifs and four-petalled rosettes. The lamp sits on a ring base joining the handle. For similar see: Oil lamps of the Holy Land, The Adler Collection, 2004, no. 978.
